   First you create an account on the site(s) of your choice. Then by searching their database, you can find others that share the same interest or even in the same area as you if you are searching for local people only.

   Next, search for friends to connect with. If you are looking for others in the business you are associated with, i.e. real estate, then in the search engine type in real estate agent or real estate agencies. If you are simply looking for friends or people in your area to connect with in your area, then try a more narrowed down city search. I'm an army wife, so I would often use sites like Myspace.com and Twitter.com to search for other army wives that I can connect with. This has allowed me to learn a wealth of information and resources available to me that otherwise I knew nothing about.

   Now that you have started your database of friends or followers, now the trick is to keep them coming back. If you're using the site for business purposes, there are areas on these social networking sites that would allow others to either follow you or constantly keep them posted as to what's going on by posting bulletins or blogs. For example if you're having a Summer Closeout Sale or offering 50% off on certain items, then post a bulletin or blog letting your customers, followers and friends know. Also try posting weekly blogs to keep your followers coming back for more.
